Bonalu is celebrated every year in the month of Ashada Masam, which usually falls in July or August according to the Gregorian calendar. This festival is celebrated mainly in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, as well as in other parts of the state of Telangana, in honor of the Hindu Goddess Mahakali. It is a merry and colorful affair with women dressing up in their traditional outfits called “sarees”, jewelry, and other accessories. Women carry “Bonam”, a meal made of rice, milk, and jaggery, in earthen pots over their heads as offerings to the goddess.
